Be a beginner
February 1, 2026
I used to play football (soccer if you are reading this from the US) a lot when I was growing up and for some reason I stopped playing. Tried to pick back up in college but did not stay consistent there either.
I love the sport, playing not watching, so decided that I’d pick it one more time and started going to pick up games in the city, only to break my delusion that I was good.
If I were to rate myself, I’d put me in the last place. Sure, you don’t compare yourself to anyone as everyone plays at a different level, but still.
I am also not discouraged by any means. If anything, this put a new perspective in my eyes.
Be a beginner. Try things every year or so where if they were to rank you, you’d come last. It’s a sign of progress, youthfulness, of trying new things, exploring new things. With time, you’ll be good at it. Or not. Exploring is what really matters.
If you read thus far, go out and be a beginner of something, something you’ve always wanted to try.
